At Pennine Way Primary School, use the United Learning Trust History Curriculum, which is designed to inspire curiosity about the past while helping children develop a secure understanding of how Britain and the wider world have changed over time. Through a carefully sequenced curriculum, pupils build their knowledge chronologically from their own family history and local area in Key Stage 1 to the study of ancient civilisations, the Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Vikings in Key Stage 2. Learning is organised around three key themes: Quest for Knowledge, Power, Empire and Democracy, and Community and Family, enabling pupils to make meaningful connections across periods of history and cultures around the world. This broad and ambitious curriculum ensures that all children see themselves reflected in what they learn, while also developing an appreciation of diverse societies and historical experiences. 

Throughout their learning, pupils are encouraged to think and work as historians. They investigate a range of primary and secondary sources, ask historically valid questions, analyse evidence and explore concepts such as change and continuity, cause and consequence, significance and chronology. History lessons promote critical thinking, discussion and purposeful writing, helping pupils to develop both their historical knowledge and disciplinary skills. Regular opportunities to revisit prior learning, make comparisons between civilisations and connect learning across subjects ensure that knowledge is retained and built upon over time. Through this approach, pupils develop a deep understanding of the past and gain the confidence to explore how history continues to shape the world today
