Geography
At Pennine Way Primary School, use the United Learning Trust Geography Curriculum, which is designed to develop children's curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for life. Learning begins with the local area, where pupils explore their school and community through mapping and fieldwork, before broadening their understanding to the United Kingdom and the wider world. As they progress through school, children study a range of diverse locations and geographical themes, including rivers, oceans, deserts, volcanoes, rainforests, climate zones, migration, trade and sustainability. Through carefully chosen case studies from across the globe, pupils develop a secure understanding of both physical and human geography and learn how people and places are interconnected.
The curriculum is carefully sequenced to build knowledge, skills and geographical understanding over time. Pupils learn to use maps, atlases and fieldwork techniques to investigate the world around them, ask geographical questions and analyse evidence to draw informed conclusions. They explore important contemporary issues such as environmental change, renewable energy, global trade and migration, helping them understand their role as responsible global citizens. By the end of school, we want to be equipped with the knowledge, enquiry skills and confidence to think critically about the challenges and opportunities facing our world, while developing a strong appreciation of the diverse environments and communities within it.
