At Pennine Way Primary School, we are committed to preparing our pupils for life in modern Britain. Through our curriculum, assemblies, wider school experiences and daily interactions, we actively promote the Fundamental British Values identified by the Department for Education.

We encourage children to develop an understanding of the world around them and to show respect, kindness and consideration towards others. Our pupils learn that people may hold different beliefs, values and opinions, and that these differences should be embraced with tolerance and respect. At the same time, they understand the importance of following the laws and rules that help keep our communities safe, fair and inclusive.

As part of this commitment, Pennine Way is proud to be a Rights Respecting School and has achieved the Bronze Award. Through the UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools Award, children learn about their rights and responsibilities and how these help to create a positive, respectful and inclusive school community. This work is closely linked to our School Council, where elected representatives have the opportunity to share the views of their classmates, contribute to decision-making and help bring about positive change within the school. This provides pupils with meaningful opportunities to experience democracy in action and understand the importance of having a voice.

The five Fundamental British Values are:

• Individual Liberty – developing confidence, independence and the freedom to make choices safely and responsibly.

These values are woven throughout school life and underpin our commitment to helping every child become a respectful, responsible and active citizen who is well prepared for the future. Through our Rights Respecting work, School Council and wider curriculum, pupils are encouraged to understand their role in society and the positive contribution they can make to their community and the wider world.
